MINIMUM STANDARD FOR SETTING UP STUDENTS INDUSTRIAL WORK EXPERIENCE SCHEME (SIWES) AND INDUSTRIAL LIASON UNIT IN POLYTECHNICS AND MONOTECHNIS.

 

The Minimum Requirement for Setting-Up SIWES and Industrial Liaison Unit in Polytechnics and Monotechnics.

The resources that have to be set up are classified by their sub-heads and listed in the following.

(1) Office and equipment – provision of suitable office accommodation for SIWES officers to conduct their affairs and to house SIWES records and documents. This include:

  • SIWES/Industrial Liaison Coordinator’s office
  • Assistant SIWES/Industrial Liaison Coordinator’ office(s)
  • Office furnishing
  • Computer system and ICT facilitation.
  • Store space for housing SIWES logbook, handbooks, documents, records, etc.

 

(2) Personnel – appointment of suitably qualified officers to administer SIWES activities at institutional and departmental levels. This is to comprise;

  1. Institution’s SIWES Coordinator -  basic requirements for the appointment are;
  • to be appointed by the Rector/Provost among the teaching staff on a terminal base.
  • not less than the rank of Senior Lecturer.
  • specializing in any of the professional programmes offered in the Polytechnics and Monotechnics.
  • to serve for minimum of 4 years, renewable for maximum of one (1) term only.
  • to be consider for reduced teaching contact hours during tenure.
  • to be member of the Academic Board.
  1. Assistant SIWES Coordinator:
  • appoint same way as SIWES Coordinator.
  • not less than the rank of Lecturer 1 or equivalent.
  • specializing in any of the professional programmes offered in the Polytechnics and Monotechnics.
  • to serve for 2 years, renewable for maximum of two (2) terms.
  • to be considered for reduced teaching contact hours during the tenure.
  1. Departmental SIWES Supervisors – one per department
  • appointed by departmental HOD from amongst the staff who specializes in the core area(s) of the department.
  • not less than the rank of Lecturer 1
  •  to serve for a minimum of 2 years, renewable for maximum of two (2) terms.

(3) SIWES/Industrial Liaison Brief – the statement of the institutions SIWES policy plan on two main aspects;

  1. SIWES/Industrial Liaison blueprint;
  • the general overview of the development, operation and implementation of SIWES/Industrial Liaison in relation to academic programmes the institution propose to offer for the first five years which is subject to be reviewed by the institution on expiration.

 

  1. SIWES/Industrial Liaison Financial Budget Plan;
  • in relation to the academic program(s) plan for the first five years.
  • in relation to SIWES personnel.
  • in relation to SIWES resources (please refer to requirement 4 below)
  • in relation to the Unit’s operating overheads and administrative expenses.

(4) SIWES/Industrial Liaison Resources – provision of essential resources for conducting SIWES including:

  1. SIWES/Industrial Liaison students manual.
  2. Institution’s SIWES Log books.
  3. Master and placement list – samples.
  4. SIWES orientation – plan and programme

(5) Any other requirements as may be request from time to time

Although the above stipulates the minimum requirement for setting up SIWES Unit in the institution, it can be built upon.
